Mary Hamlin's husband Captain James Hamlin was a Merchant Navy seaman based in the town of Greenock, Scotland. The ship John Bright constructed in 1847, was owned by Hamlin & Co of Greenock. The ship was a clipper, which traded tea with China. From the available records, it can be assumed that during the ship's voyage to China, Mary Hamlin passed away on the ship and was buried in the Scottish Cemetery in Calcutta when the ship made a stop at the Calcutta port.
