Late of the Sailor's Home
Detailed information:
The Sailor's Home was established in 1837 in Bow-Bazaar, in a building which came to be occupied by the Police Magistrate’s Court. The new, more imposing structure was built and opened in 1868. Their object was to “provide board and lodging for seamen at a reasonable rate, to protect them from extortion and imposition, and to take care of their hard earned wages until they leave Calcutta”. By 1857 it offered accommodation to about 250 men and 20 officers.
