Fort Gloster Mill company started as Bowreah Cotton Mill in the year 1820 at Fort Gloster, a location 15 miles south of Calcutta in the district of Howrah. The Bowreah Cotton mill closed down in 1837 and reopened in 1837 as New Fort Gloster Mills Company. In this company, Dwarkanath Tagore was a major share holder. By 1840 it was the heart of a large industrial complex that included a cotton twist yarn factory, a rum distillery. a foundry, an oil mill and a paper mill. It also had five steam engines. Fort Gloster Mill became one of the largest mills in Bengal by 1919 with the coming of Jute.
