His father C.J. Montague was a teacher of Mathematics at the Oriental Seminary. He was critical of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, the celebrated Eurasian poet and commented that '... it was laughable to see him in the morning, spurred and booted to the knee on a powerful Arab, coursing the plain' (see his article 'Henry Louis Vivian Derozio' in the Oriental Magazine 1:10, Oct. 1843. Christopher Hawes states in his Poor Relations that Montague thought though 'brilliant' in conversation, Derozio was 'superficial and arrogant'. (p. 194)
