His father is recorded as a subscriber of a A Treatise on Marine Architecture by Peter Hedderwick (see http://tinyurl.com/ncoly2m) and is described as the 'Regent Northern LH'. The 1851 England, Wales and Scotland Census lists Captain Soutar (note the spelling) as 'Buoy Master In The Service Of The Commissioners Of Northn Light Houses'. His two other sons, William Soutar and J. P. Soutar, are listed as grocery merchant and scholar respectively.
